THE GREAT RUSSIAN EXPERIMENT

An urban experiment is unfolding in the Russian cities. Russia has changed dramatically as it has gone through turbulent transitions from communism to post-communism, and has now developed a market system of its own. This grand modernization occurs in a post-soviet urban landscape, breeding new and unique urban phenomena and challenges.

“In the last 15 years much has changed. Soviet cities and their citizens were introduced to previously unknown concepts of democracy, private property and monetary economy. Naturally, the Spartan setup of the Soviet City has come under pressure of the newly acquired wealth. [..] In this model repetitive and generic architecture has reached the quality of landscape and can be dealt with as such.”
